The CAT9555 is a 16-bit I/O port expander with I2C/SMBus interface operating at 400 kHz. It provides two 8-bit configurable input/output ports with individual I/O configuration, polarity inversion, and interrupt capability. Supports 2.3V to 5.5V operation with 5V tolerant I/Os and cascadable addressing for up to eight devices on the same bus.

Why does this need a breakout?
Hand-soldering 0.65mm pitch traces is difficult without proper equipment; a breakout board with standard 0.1in header spacing lets you breadboard-prototype and test these compact devices easily. Commonly used for I2C/SMBus I/O expanders and mixed-signal microcontrollers, this breakout eliminates fine-pitch soldering and allows rapid iteration during development.
