The PCA9548A is an octal bidirectional I2C-bus multiplexer/switch that fans out one upstream I2C pair to eight selectable downstream channels. It features programmable channel selection, active-low reset, 1.8V to 5V voltage translation capability, and 6V tolerant I/O. Typical applications include isolating multiple I2C slave devices on separate buses or translating between different logic voltage levels.

Why does this need a breakout?
Hand-soldering 0.65mm pitch traces is difficult without proper equipment; a breakout board with standard 0.1in header spacing lets you breadboard-prototype and test these compact devices easily. Commonly used for I2C/SMBus I/O expanders and mixed-signal microcontrollers, this breakout eliminates fine-pitch soldering and allows rapid iteration during development.
